Death Rates from Certain Cancers Declining …

The American Cancer Society’s annual report (http://www.cancer.org/AboutUs/WhoWeAre/AnnualReport/2010-annual-report) recently released shows for the past two years death rates for the biggest cancer killers (lung, colon/rectum, breast, prostate) are down for both men (23%) and women (16%) … about a million lives saved. Lung cancer accounted for 40% of the total decline in men with smoking being the major influence. Obesity, high caloric intake and lack of physical activity are major contributors to cancer among many Americans and it is feared will one day surpass tobacco as the leading cause of cancer in the U.S. While both new cases and deaths continue to decline for just about everyone, it is of particular concern that rates continue to remain high for African Americans compared to Whites. American Indians and Alaska Natives, rates have stayed steady.
