Great thinker

“To be a great leader and so always master of the situation, one must of necessity have been a great thinker in action. An eagle was never yet hatched from a goose’s egg.” ~ James Thomas

Congratulations … New Assistant Dean of Curriculum at SW Regional Campus Named …

Please also join me in congratulating Dr. Sandra C. Mobley, Director, Perinatal Center and Project Director, Enterprise Community Healthy Start Initiative on being named Campus Assistant Dean for Curriculum, Southwest Georgia Regional Campus. Our SW Georgia Regional Campus enables 3rd and 4th year medical students to perform their clinical rotations with SW Georgia physicians as part of a statewide strategy to help with Georgia’s physician shortage. We are excited to have Dr. Mobley as part of our team in SW Georgia and we thank Dr. Linda Boyd for leading this important search.

Our Students Continue with Philanthropy and Community Involvement …

For over 10 years our students, with the guidance and teaching of our MCG clinical faculty have been helping meet the healthcare needs of the uninsured and underserved in our community. The original clinic has morphed in to a day clinic and 4 night clinics which include the Monday Night Clinic, the Women’s Clinic, the Clinica Hispaña de la Salud, and the Asian Clinic. On October 20, our Class of 2015 will be hosting a golf tournament at Goshen Plantation to raise funds for support of the operating costs of the clinics. These clinics serve a most deserving population of our community and need your support. Please visit http://onparwithpatientcare.weebly.com or contact Katherine Tison, onparwithpatientcare@gmail.com for more information to support our students, the clinics, and the community they serve.

Students and Summer of Research … Medical Scholars Day … Check it Out …

Recently more than 85 of our 2nd year students had the chance to show off the findings of a 10 week research endeavor at the 2012 Medical Scholars Day (http://chronicle.augusta.com/news/health/2012-09-24/students-show-summer-research-ghsu?v=1348534665). This is a great opportunity for our students to gain insights and guidance from a faculty member and collaborate with their peers. There was an impressive array of research topics and we will feature some of these over the coming weeks. Our students in Athens also have a poster session on October 16th and we look forward to high quality research presentations then too. The Summer Research program provides a great opportunity for our students to learn (through experience) the fundamentals of research. Congratulations to all who participated this year and thanks to their dedicated faculty mentors and to all the program committee members for their support.

Alumni Reaching Out to Our Students … Helping Our Students Travel (HOST) Program …

Currently our Alumni Association is working with Alums all over the country to participate in the HOST program. Alumni will open their homes for students as they visit for residency interviews, which will decrease the student’s travel expenses. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to network with past graduates, learn about the institution and program they are interviewing with and also get inside information on the offerings of the city they would be living in. Contact our Alumni Office at alumni@georgiahealth.edu or sign up here http://giving.gru.edu//host.
GHSU and Jianghan University Partnership … Global Agreement … Signed, Sealed, and Delivered …

We are very excited about the institutional agreement that was signed earlier this week allowing students from Jianghan University to graduate from GHSU’s undergraduate nursing program. This exciting result is from a relationship that began 2 years ago. It is the first global agreement for Nursing. We are equally excited about the budding relationship that we are building with Dr. Charles Li.
Another Example of Patient and Family Centered Care …

Congratulations to Dr. Jim Rawson and the Department of Radiology on a fantastic article in the American College of Radiology Bulletin (http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/acr/acrbulletin_201209/#/18) featuring our Mammography Section and our focus on patient and family centered care.

Reminder … Mandatory Flu Vaccine – Members of Our Medical Staff & Hospital Personnel …

All members of the Medical Staff must receive the flu vaccine and this year we have to report our results to the CDC. Similarly, we will require all observers, students and any persons who through our health system will have contact with or be in close proximity to patients to also receive the flu vaccine. The Hospital is also requiring all employees to be immunized. For credentialed staff, if you receive your shot at another facility, please provide documentation to the Medical Staff Office. The exceptions to this requirement are previous adverse reaction to flu vaccine, egg allergy, and religious objections. Vaccine will be available between October 25 and December 1 at Employee Health.
