Happy 30th Birthday … Our Level One Trauma Center Celebrates …
In 1982 GHS Medical Center became Georgia’s first designated Level One Trauma center under the leadership of Drs. Arlie R. Mansberger Jr., (then) Chair, Department of Surgery, Dan Ward, Emergency Medicine physician and Richard C. Treat, first Trauma Chief. Dr. Colville Ferdinand, Chief, Section of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care is now at the helm of our trauma center (http://news.georgiahealth.edu/archives/6423). Adam Dennis, and Reda Bassali on the publication of a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on the benefit of exercise in reducing diabetes risk and fatness in previously inactive, overweight children (http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1360862. Also please join us in congratulating Dr. Sheldon Litwin as co-author on a University of Utah study in JAMA on the cardiovascular benefits of gastric bypass surgery after six years (http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1360861). Drs. Davis and Litwin were quoted in NBC’s story on the Trust for America’s Health F as in Fat study also released Tuesday (http://vitals.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/09/18/13922737-if-you-think-were-fat-now-wait-till-2030?lite). During October, the Breast Health Center is offering Saturday mammograms. To schedule a routine mammogram, please call 706-721-XRAY (9729). GHS was the first health system in Georgia – and one of only a few in the nation – to screen patients for breast cancer using tomosynthesis, a 3D digital mammogram that improves cancer detection and reduces false-positive results. Regional Campuses Are Growing Across the Nation … We Are Leaders …
Recently our Regional Campus Leadership Team had a highly productive meeting at the GHSU/UGA Medical Partnership Campus to review our progress and plan areas of priority for our distributed educational network. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the number of regional campuses across the country have grown to 120 compared to last year of 94. We are very proud to be in that growing number. We want to thank Dr. Linda Boyd for her tremendous leadership of our regional campuses initiative, which is integral to our mission.
Diversity Summit … Another Great Success Again This Year … Great to be at the Kroc Center …
Congratulations to Dr. Kent Guion and the staff of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion on another successful Diversity Summit held last week at the wonderful Kroc Center. It was well attended with an excellent array of presenters. The keynote speaker, Ms. Soledad O’Brien, gave a remarkable and inspiring speech. Congratulations to Dr. Connie Drisko and Mr. Jonathan (Brett) Heimlich on receiving Diversity Leadership awards for their many efforts on behalf of our institution.

The Strategic Planning Council is in the process of evaluating goals and objectives, the Consolidation Working Group is preparing the draft prospectus (SACS due date no later than October 1) and the Facilities team is working on a plan to have ready by early December.
