Confidence

“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” ~ Douglas MacArthur

BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Rhee Fincher on receiving America’s top medical education award: the Association of American Medical Colleges’ Abraham Flexner Award for Distinguished Service to Medical Education. Dr. Fincher is the first recipient in Georgia of the Flexner Award. Dr. Fincher is also the first female physician ever to receive this distinction. Rhee’s many accomplishments can be found here (http://issuu.com/ghsu/docs/medicinesp12/1). We hope that you will celebrate this honor with us … for Rhee, MCG, GHSU and our community and state. A remarkable and unprecedented honor.

Institution …

We also want to congratulate Ms. Annie Hunt Burris on recently being named Executive Officer for George Mason University’s Prince William Campus in Manassas, Virginia. Annie was a great colleague to our institution, spearheading our economic development and advancing our presence across the state. Although we will miss her, we wish her great success in her new position and we know that she will also be looking out for national opportunities for continued collaboration with us.

We also want to congratulate Mr. Nikhil Kadle, third-year medical student, on receiving the 2012 American Heart Association Student Scholarship in Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke as well as an AHA Travel Award for Junior Investigators to present “Plasminogen Deficiency And Gender Dimorphism After Thromboembolic Stroke” at the 2013 AHA Stroke Conference.

2012 Medical Scholars Research Day … Posters Highlighted Continued …

Continuing highlights of 2012 Medical Scholars Research Day, student Austin Cail (Class of 2015) with Advisor, Dr. Abdullah Kutlar (Medicine, Adult Sickle Cell Center) presented the poster “Retrospective Analysis of Core Decompression in Avascular Necrosis of the Femoral Head in Patients with Sickle Cell Disease”, evaluating the long-term outcomes of core decompression in 100 Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) patients. Patients had a mean (+/-SD) follow up time of 10.0 +-7.2 years after decompression, with five hips undergoing recoring years later – of which none went into total hip replacement (THR). Two patients with symptom relief had THR 7 and 13 years after the core. This study suggests that core decompression is a practical option for SCD patients with early state AVN of the femoral head … an important observation. Good study! More to follow …

MAG … House of Delegates Meeting … Great meeting! Phenomenal turnout! …

Our physicians and alumni were a remarkably strong presence at the recent Medical Association of Georgia House of Delegates meeting including Dr. Dan DeLoach, Immediate Past President, Dr. Sandra Reed, President, Dr. Ashish Jain, Chair, Credentials Committee, Dr. Jack Chapman, Program Co-chair and Dr. David Bogorad, Georgia Physician Leadership Academy Fellow and also of course as our President of GHSU Medical Associates – the largest single group practice in MAG. Brett Heimlich was also there representing our Medical Student Leadership. MAG is the leading advocate on legislative and legal issues for Georgia physicians. It was a busy and productive meeting including important policies review on health care policies, legislation, finance and administration and health care reform – most of direct pertinent information in academic medicine. There were also education sessions on electronic health records, medical graduate sessions, and medication safety….led by Dr. Tennent Slack, former MCG fellow. MCG Alumnus Dr. Scott Bohlke was also installed as the incoming President (big Congratulations!). We very much appreciate Dr. Deloach’s and Dr. Reed’s leadership and look forward to supporting Dr. Bohlke this coming year.

Saying Goodbye to a MCG Residency Graduate and Community Icon, Role Model …

and Legend …

Finally, it is with a heavy heart that our community says goodbye to Dr. W.G. “Curley” Watson. Dr. Watson has been an icon in our community teaching and practicing medicine for over 60 years. He has delivered over 15,000 babies (many of you, I’m sure). Last year, Dr. Watson was honored with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award at GHSU Graduation. Over the years, Dr. Watson has shaped the lives of many medical students and residents that have had the honor of being taught by him. Dr. Watson has impacted all of our community and was “a medical giant” who was also so remarkably humble. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and our community.

Many thanks for your leadership.

Warm Regards,
